Here are a few of my favorites: The original New York Times review from 1976 says the film works well, and is “superbly acted” but is not strictly about madness. So Roman Polanski asks in the opening line of The Tenant, in what feels like a not-so-subtle wink at an audience preparing to watch the last in his trilogy of horror films known as his unofficial “Apartment Trilogy”—a trinity of horror films linked by their shared setting of an apartment as the feature setting for the horrors of the premise to unfold.

Accordingly, when I watched The Tenant, in which Polanski, playing the lead role, literalizes his cross-gender identification and subjects himself to many of the same victimization scenarios that befall Catherine Deneueve in Repulsion and Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby, it seemed to reinforce that “because,” without making the “how” or “why” any clearer.

A quiet and inconspicuous man rents an apartment in France where the previous tenant committed suicide, and begins to suspect his landlord and neighbors are trying to subtly change him into the last tenant so that he too will kill himself.

2003-06-28 Because Polanski has cast himself in the lead, the film feels like his most personal film, to the point of being invasive. “The Tenant” may have been a portrait of how Polanski felt everyone was staring at him, watching him and whispering about him after he’d leave the room. Roman Polanski's The Tenant has an unusual hold on many films fans. Something about the marriage of narrative, images and sound (Sarde score) makes it unusually fulfilling and embraceable. It's flawless on that front. It was one of my most wanted films to reach Blu-ray.
